The third time is the charm for Jannik Sinner. After finishing runner up at the Miami Open in 2021 and 2023, the Italian won the 2024 Men’s Singles title by beating Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 6-1 this Sunday at the Hard Rock Stadium.

This is the third title for the World No. 3 this year, after the Australian Open and Rotterdam. He is 22-1 this season and is the first Italian to win the Miami Open. Next week, he will climb one position in the ranking, up to No. 2.

“Grigor it’s nice to see you at this level. Such a pleasure to not only play with you but to talk and learn with you. It’s so nice. I am so grateful, and this is such a special place. The atmosphere, this is the most special tournament for me, hope to see you all again next year,” he commented in the trophy ceremony.

Three years ago, Sinner could barely sleep in the day before the Miami Open final and had no chance against an in-form Hubert Hurkacz. In 2023, he ended up losing to Daniil Medvedev, who he faced with certain ease in the semifinal this season. Now, he was able to finally celebrate in the Magic City.

“It was a great performance for me, especially in the semifinal and final, which for me is more important. Being number two is an amazing feeling, Sport is one thing, and life is very different, I am happy to be in this position, just enjoying every moment. These are special days, winning a tournament, doesn’t matter what kind of tournament, it means a lot to me,” said the Italian.

The 22-year-old converted two break points in the first set, in the fifth and ninth games, to close in 42 minutes.

In the second set, Sinner also had two breaks, in the fourth and sixth games, and served for the match at 5-1, clinching his win in 1 hour and 13 minutes. He won 88% of first-serve points (21 of 24).

“It’s Jannik’s week. He’s been playing amazing tennis. It’s impressive how he’s been able to keep that way of playing. I think now Jannik is playing, I mean, outstanding tennis. There is nothing to say about that. You see how focused he is, how determined he is, the way he’s hitting his shots, there is zero doubt, so a lot of that level, it’s extremely high up”, affirmed Dimitrov.

The 32-year-old and No. 11 seed was attempting to capture his second Masters 1000 title, after Cincinnati in 2017. During his run to the final here, he defeated world No. 9 Hurkacz in the fourth round, No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarters, and No. 5 Alexander Zverev in the semifinal.

“I just want to focus on the positives this week. It’s been a tournament I have not been able to do well I think in the past years. In a way, it was also a goal of mine to come out here and give my best shot,” commented the Bulgarian, who will rise back to the Top 10 this upcoming week.

As for the remainder of the season, Sinner still thinks there is a lot of improvement to be done.

“The clay season is coming, usually, I struggle there, let’s see what I can do this year. Rome for me is an important tournament because playing in front of your home crowd is always amazing. I am very relaxed. I have the feeling that I have learned many things from last year, what I can do better physically and mentally, I am in a different shape. So, let’s see how it goes,” exclaimed the new Miami Open champion.

Less than 24 hours after Danielle Collins’ win, American tennis celebrated again at the 2024 Miami Open as Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sofia Kenin kept captured the 2024 Miami Open Women’s Doubles title prevailing over Canada’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Eric Routliffe, from New Zealand, 4-6, 7-6(5), 11-9 this Sunday at the Hard Rock Stadium.

A tour veteran, Mattek-Sands achieved her 30th doubles title in the WTA – including the 2016 Miami Open, playing with Czech Lucie Safarova –, while this was Kenin’s fourth. This is their second win this season, after Abu Dhabi, and the third as a team, after Beijing 2019.

“I have my family, my parents here, a friend of mine that had heart attacks with me all week. We’re all celebrating Easter after that. I love coming to Miami, I feel the support here,” commented the 39-year-old Mattek-Sands, from Rochester, Minn.

This is the second straight year that an All-American doubles team has won the Miami Open: in 2023, Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff were crowned champions.

Sofia Kenin is a 25-year-old who resides in Pembroke Pines, Fla., a city about 15 minutes from Hard Rock Stadium. Currently at World No. 58 in singles, she won the Australian Open in 2020.

“I love it. Absolutely. You know you don’t, you’re not home that often and there was a chance. I love that here and the fact that I was able to be here for two weeks was nice because I’m obviously on the road and I enjoyed it. I love the fans that came out supporting me,” commented Kenin.

Both players were not initially in the draw and entered the competition as the first alternates due to a withdrawal.

Besides that, Mattek-Sands played the entire semifinal and the deciding match today with a bandage in her left foot, due to an ankle injury she suffered last Friday.

Dabrowski and Routliffe, the current US Open winners, are ranked No. 4 and 5, respectively. They entered the draw as the second seeds.

In the first set, the pair from Canada and New Zealand took advantage of breaks in the first and third, both with unforced errors from Kenin, and were better serving and in the net to secure the 1-0 advantage in 42 minutes.

The Americans opened a 3-1 lead in the second and had chances to serve for the set at 5-2 and 5-3 but did not make it. Dabrowski and Routliffe eventually forced a tie-break, and again Mattek-Sands and Kenin took control from the beginning, with a 5-0 advantage. However, they needed five set points to win 7-5, in one hour, and tie the match.

“It’s funny because in this match we had both scenarios, you know, it was close in that first set. We had a couple of chances, a couple of deuce points to make it even closer, and then we were up big in the second and I got a bit nervous,” explained Mattek-Sands.

During the match tie-break, again the American pair took control from the beginning and the opponents started to come back. At 9-6, Mattek-Sands and Kenin missed three championship points and the score was 9-9.

Kenin served to make it 10-9, and then they broke Routliffe’s serve to celebrate a very special win, considering all the circumstances.

“Every scenario has always happened in tennis, and you always make it out on the other side, and you live to compete another day if you want. But it’s just important to kind of stick to the strategy and bring the energy that’s why you’ll see us talk a little bit on the sidelines,” she added. The doubles winners also commented on Danielle Collins’s triumph in singles: “I think it’s great. American tennis, and of course, many congrats to her. I mean, she’s playing some unreal tennis and yeah, I feel like we’re all pushing each other. We all know how to compete against each other, but we want the Americans to win of course to drive the sport,” commented Kenin.

There is no place like home – especially for Danielle Collins. This Saturday, the St. Petersburg, Fla. native won the 2024 Miami Open presented by Itau Women’s Singles title, her first career WTA 1000, after defeating World No. 4 Elena Rybakina 7-5, 6-3.

“What a dream come true, to have played at the level that I have played consistently over the last two weeks. This has been such a journey for me. Thirty years old, and this was the final of my first WTA 1000, it has been a different journey than I think a lot of the stories that we are familiar with. It has just been amazing to go out today and to have felt the energy that I felt from the fans and literally feel like I am playing in front of thousands of my best friends, that was just surreal. I will never forget this day because of that,” exclaimed Collins.

At 30 years old, this is just her third title, after Palermo and San Jose (both in 2021). The American lifted the trophy at the Hard Rock Stadium amidst a great moment in her career: she won 17 of her last 21 matches, and with today’s win, she will move to World No. 22 as of next week.

“The encouragement I got, It was hard for me to hide the emotion. I think these are the moments that we live for, and don’t always get to have them. It was just really special,” she added.

Despite this accomplishment today, Collins maintains her decision to retire at the end of this season, due to off-court health issues. The former University of Virginia standout (she won the NCAA titles in 2014 and 2016) did not set a date for her farewell from professional tennis and plans to play at least until the US Open.

Speaking of history, two of the greatest tennis players in history witnessed Collins’ win at Hard Rock Stadium: Martina Navratilova, the first female player to win the Miami Open, in 1985, and Andre Agassi, a six-times champion here, tied with Novak Djokovic with most wins in men’s singles.

Besides Collins and Navratilova, other four US female players won in singles: Chris Evert (1986), Venus Williams (1998, 1999, 2001), Serena Williams (2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015) and Sloane Stephens (2018). She is the first to win since the tournament went to Hard Rock Stadium.

In her turn, Rybakina was seeking redemption after falling short of winning the Miami Open last year, losing to Czech Petra Kvitova. Once again, the Kazakh lost to a tour veteran. Despite the loss, the Kazakh still leads the head-to-head 3-2.

“Yeah, it was a very tough match, but as I said, we were not expecting for me to be in the final with all the circumstances and that I didn’t play so much before the tournament. So overall I think it is a positive week, and yeah, it was a lot of good matches. I’m happy with that,” commented Rybakina, who reached her fourth final this season.

Rybakina won titles in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi and lost in Doha to Iga Swiatek and Collins at the Miami Open. Also, her record this season now is 22-4.

The break points saved made a difference in the first set: while Collins did it five times, Rybakina failed once in four chances.  And that happened in the 12th game when the American was leading 6-5 and broke the Kazakh’s serve to clinch the first set in exactly one hour.

With some help from the noisy crowd at Hard Rock Stadium, Collins kept her good momentum at the beginning of the second set, holding serve and breaking Rybakina in the second game, 2-0.

But the Kazakh didn’t give up and broke Collins’ serve in the following game, making the score 2-2 by holding her serve in the fourth game.

The World No. 4 had three break points in the seventh game but did not make any. Collins held serve 4-3 and then broke the Kazakh to increase her lead.

“Yeah, I had a lot of chances. As I was saying before, sometimes luck is on your side; sometimes not, because with all the chances I had, not to break once, I think it is a bit of luck also there. But yeah, I was still trying to fight every point. I was still there, but yeah, as I said, there were too many chances that I did not take. So obviously it was difficult to come back after,” commented Rybakina.

Serving for the match at 5-3, Collins needed four championship points to finish the match and win her first WTA 1000 at No. 53, the lowest-ranked Miami Open champion in history.

“I had a few match points, and Elena was doing some great things out there and pushing me back and forcing me to come up with some good stuff movement-wise, hitting hard shots, hitting the small parts of the court. So that is challenging when someone forces you to come up with your best stuff. I certainly felt that on the returns and the serving today. I knew that I had to bring my ‘A’ Game,” said the Florida native.

Collins revealed that winning a WTA 1000 was something in her plans for this last season, and the act that she will not be playing professional tennis as of next year has been helping in how she comes to the tournaments:

“I think part of the reason why I played so well and did a good job today was because I had that mentality of, like, I’m going to enjoy every minute of this. This is my last year, this is my last season, and these are some of my final events. I want to remember these moments.”

“I feel like today I woke up and when we were in the car, I was, like, oh, this is going to be the first time I play a final in my home state and have a lot of crowd support. This is so exciting. We changed the playlist and got pumped up. It was just so much fun. This day has been, like, the best. I have so many family members and friends who have flown in from all around the country and the world. We’re going to have a great weekend,” explained the new Miami Open champion.

India’s Rohan Bopanna and Australia’s Matthew Ebden clinched the 2024 Miami Open men’s doubles title after defeating Croatia’s Ivan Dodig and American Austin Krajicek, 6-7(3) 6-3 10-6 in 1 hour and 41 minutes.

This is the pairs second title in 2024, after winning their first grand slam together at the Australian Open in January. They teamed up at the start of last year when they won Doha and Indian Wells. Currently ranked No. 2 and No. 3 respectively, they will pass Krajicek at the No. 1 spot on the doubles list.

“It’s been magical, especially to win here, in the Magic City. It’s been beautiful. I have to thank Matthew, who has been such a great partner for what he does on the court, with the communication, with the way we handle pressure situations,” commented Bopanna.  After a few break point chances that were not converted for both sides, Bopanna and Ebden broke Dodig’s serve in the 11th game to take a 6-5 lead. They got broken in the following game, after losing two set points – Ebden also had a double fault at the deciding point, and the set went to a tie-break.

Krajicek and Dodig played better in the breaker, opening a 3-0 lead. The difference was only one point at a certain moment (4-3), but from now on the Croatian and the American took over to clinch the first set.

Bopanna and Ebden broke Dodig’s serve in the second game and opened a 3-0 lead at the beginning of the second set. That was crucial for them to level the score in only 29 minutes and take it to a deciding match tie-break.

The lead changed a few times during the match tie-break, but after a tie at 6-6, the Indian and the Australian left them no more chances to score points, clinching the win 10-6.

Krajicek was a runner-up here last year, teaming up with Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, and lost another chance to win the title. The Croatian/American pair are 89-39 now (13-5 in 2024). They are currently the World No. 5 team in the doubles ranking and own eight career titles, including five during the 2023 season.

At 44 years old, Bopanna is now 26-37 in tour-level doubles finals, winning his 6th ATP Masters 1000 title (6-8). Ebden is 36 years old and 11-12 in tour-level doubles finals. Besides the two titles with Bopanna, another important trophy he won was in 2022 at Wimbledon with Australian Max Purcell.

“I think that is what everyone plays for, they want to be at the highest level and want to play at the top. When you win a tournament and you reach the top of the rankings, you’re the best in the world. It’s a beautiful moment and you know, those 20-30 years of hard work you have put into is the reason why I am enjoying it right now and I’m really happy. Without hard work. I don’t think anything for anyone in any field is possible.” added Bopanna.

Bopanna is the first Miami Open Indian champion since Leander Paes in 2012 (with Czech Radek Stepanek), while Ebden is the first Australian champion since Mark Woodforde and Todd Woodbridge in 2000.

Two months after a five-setter that saw Jannik Sinner win the 2024 Australian Open against Daniil Medvedev, today the Italian crushed the World No. 4 6-1, 6-2, in 1 hour and 10 minutes. The Italian will have his third chance to win the Miami Open title, now against Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

“It’s the third time that I can play the final here in Miami, which is an amazing achievement for me. The first time I came here I made final, like, I couldn’t sleep that night. The second time, which was last year, I was relaxed because I went through periods where I had already, you know, experiences,” added the World No. 3.

This was Sinner’s fifth straight victory against Medvedev, who still leads the head-to-head 6-5. His last victory over the Italian was at the Miami Open final last year.

The No. 2 seed had three chances to break Medvedev’s serve in the second game and did it. In the following game, the Medvedev had two break points but was not able to convert them and saw the Italian go ahead 3-0.

“I played very solid today, especially in the beginning of the sets. Then after, he missed a couple of shots where usually he is not missing them. Then when there is, even if the difference is quite small from one player to the other one, but if one plays a little bit better that day and the other player plays a little bit worse, sometimes the difference is big,” explained Sinner.

The 22-year-old’s rallies were so intense that he seemed to be inspired by the presence of Serena Williams, the player with the most Miami Open singles titles, eight.

The Italian answered with another break, this time after four chances, and the score was now 4-0. Sinner confirmed his serve in the following game and was within one from winning the first set.

Medvedev finally got himself on the board in the following game, but it was too late: Sinner served for the first set, 6-1, in 33 minutes, with 81% of 1st serve points won (13 out of 16).

“I think the tactics I used at the beginning of the match were not the problem. The problem was the execution, too many mistakes. Yeah, not enough precision,” explained Medvedev.

The 2024 Australian Open champion ended the match with 17 winners, against only seven from his opponent. He now holds a 21-1 season campaign, the best on the tour.

On Sunday, the Italian plays his third final in the 2024 season against Dimitrov, who prevailed over Germany’s Alexander Zverev, the No. 4 seed, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-4.

Unlike the other men’s semifinal, this match began without a player taking an early lead, as both began holding serves and alternating great plays, to the crowd’s delight.

In the tenth game, the Bulgarian had a break point and won it, securing the first set in 43 minutes.

Zverev and Dimitrov held their serves during the entire second set, forcing a tie-breaker.

The German won the first point on the Bulgarian’s serve and soon had a 4-1 lead, due to a double fault and some errors from Dimitrov. The 32-year-old started to make more unforced errors and Zverev tied the match.

In the third set, Zverev had a break point in the fourth game, but Dimitrov came back to hold serve. In the seventh game, the Bulgarian had his first break point since the tenth game of the first set, and he broke the German, now serving at 4-3. Following that, Dimitrov held his serve and Zverev also held his.

It was time for Dimitrov to serve for the match at 5-4. And he clinched the win in his first match point, after 2 hours and 35 minutes.

“With each win, it’s inevitable, you get more excited, the adrenaline kicks in, you want to do better and more, and here we are, in the final. I kept doing the work, and discipline has brought me to that moment,” exclaimed the Bulgarian.

This will be the fourth match between Dimitrov and Sinner, with the Italian leading the head-to-head 2-1. Their previous encounter was in the Beijing quarterfinal last year, and Sinner won in three sets (6-4, 3-6, 6-2).

With today’s win and the one against World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarters, the 32-year-old tour veteran defeated two Top-5 players in the same tournament.

This was Dimitrov’s third semifinal in the last four Masters 1000 events (reached the semifinal in Shanghai and the final in Paris last year). This will be his third final at this level of his career – he won in Cincinnati in 2017 and lost last year in Paris.

“What is better above all is that I have been able to put those matches back-to-back, the consistency of beating the top players. That, to me, is way bigger success than anything else.” Said Dimitrov

Dimitrov will return to the ranking’s top-ten players group, as No. 9, for the first time since 2018.

“I mean, if you do that, you get the ranking, if you do that, things are just getting better for you, but to do that is where it all comes through, discipline, hard work, dedication, the adjustments to very different players. You need to be able to do that constantly and that has been happening for the past eight, nine, twelve months,” added the tour veteran.

In the Women’s doubles final, No. 2 seeds Gabriela Dabrowski from Canada and Erin Routliffe from New Zealand will play Americans Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Sofia Kenin, who entered the draw as alternates.

Dabrowski and Routliffe, who won the US Open last year, overcame Americans Alycia Parks and Asia Muhammad 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-4.

The Canadian returns to the deciding match after winning in Miami in 2017, partnering with Xu Yifan, from the People’s Republic of China, while this would be Routliffe’s first title in the Magic City.

In the other semifinal, Mattek-Sands, born in Rochester, Minn., and Kenin, a Pembroke Pines, Fla. resident, defeated Italians Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 6-7(2), 6-4, 10-1.

A tour veteran who has won 28 doubles titles in her career – including the 2016 Miami Open, playing with Czech Lucie Safarova –, Mattek-Sands played almost all the match with a bandage on her left foot. She needed a medical timeout at the beginning of the first set.

The 39-year-old and Kenin, who won the Australian Open in singles in 2020, have two titles together: this season in Abu Dhabi and 2019 in Beijing.

The Saturday slate begins at 12:30 pm in the Stadium, with the men’s doubles final. No. 1 seeds Rohan Bopanna from India and Matthew Ebden from Australia, winners of the last Australian Open, face Croatian Ivan Dodig and Tampa, Fla. resident Austin Krajicek, the second seeds and the current French Open winners.

None of the four players has even won the Miami Open in their careers.

After the doubles final, St Petersburg, Fla. native Danielle Collins plays against Elena Rybakina, the 2023 Miami Open runner-up.

Rybakina aims for her fourth final this season, after winning in Brisbane, Abu Dhabi, and losing in Doha to Iga Swiatek. She is just the third player in the last ten years to make back-to-back Miami Open finals and improve her record this season to 22-3.

As for Collins, she also comes with an impressive record: won 16 of her last 20 matches. This is her first final since the 2022 Australian Open, and her first deciding game in a WTA 1000 final, coincidentally in her native state.

Rybakina leads the head-to-head 3-1 and won the last match, this year in Abu Dhabi.

Rybakina and Collins play the women’s singles final at 3 pm. For more information about the draws or the order of play, check the Miami Open website.
